PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
This program; open to high school seniors, allows students to explore a career in the emergency services field with an emphasis on developing fundamental skills in the fire & emergency medical fields. In addition to studying fire science and emergency medicine, students are taught skills in decision making, team building, and problem solving. This hands on course is also physically demanding at times as students participate in training fires and are given instruction in emergency medical responder/CPR. The training is provided in cooperation with the Alabama Fire College and is accredited by the Pro Board Fire Service Professional Qualifications System and the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress. Successful completion of the program, with a grade of "B" or higher could result in college credit.
Students that complete this training are eligible to enter a "Bridge" Recruit School to earn their Firefighter I & Firefighter II certification in five additional weeks of hands on training. Successful completion of the "bridge program" allows students to immediately enter the workforce as a fully certified State of Alabama Firefighter.

Students in the Fire Science program will learn:
-National Standard Training Curriculum (NSTC) for First Responders -The science of fire and fire behavior. -Firefighter safety and personal protective equipment -Basic fire fighting skills -Apparatus and rescue equipment familiarization -Hazmat awareness & operations -Physical training Program Benefits: -Alabama Volunteer Firefighter Certification -American Heart Association CPR Training -Hazmat Certification -Preparation for the next level of education/training |
Requirements:
-Candidates much have a current physical and pass a drug test -Candidates must pass a physical agility test as the program requires daily physical training -GPA of 2.0 or higher -Students must provide transportation to and from Oxford Fire Department. -Students may drive or be dropped off/picked up at the Fire Station -Attendance and discipline record from Oxford High School must be attached to application -Random drug screening may be conducted -Class will follow Oxford City Schools calendar, but may meet on evenings and weekends as needed -Candidates will be interviewed by Oxford Fire Department & Oxford City School personnel -Signed Liability Release Form required -Full disclosure of all social media accounts -Including, but not limited to: Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat |
Supply List / Student Cost
-Students will be issues firefighting gear and are required to pay a lab fee
-Medical Insurance coverage is required
-Student is responsible for the cost of physical and drug test administered at a clinic approved by Oxford Fire Department

This for must be completed and signed by all required parties before the student will be considered for admittance to the Fire Science Program.
